George Burgess is set to miss the first three games of the 2019 NRL season after he was found guilty of eye-gouging at a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday evening.

The Rabbitoh was playing for England during their Test win against New Zealand on Sunday when, about 60 minutes in, he appeared to gouge Dallin Watene-Zelezniak's right eye.

While referee Gerard Sutton didn't hand Burgess a punishment at the time, New Zealand later cited the incident and the Rugby Football League referred the 26-year-old to a disciplinary hearing.

The panel subsequently found Burgess guilty of eye-gouging, fining him ‎£500 and suspending him for four matches.

As a result of the ban, Burgess will miss England's third Test against New Zealand this weekend and South Sydney's first three games of the season.

Shortly after the findings, the prop Tweeted that he would "accept my punishment" but would "never accept that I gauged [sic] a fellow player's eye intentionally".

"I have too much respect for the players I play against and with," Burgess added.
