New Titans recruit Bryce Cartwright has indicated that "getting out of Sydney" wasn't the only reason for his abrupt departure from the Penrith Panthers.

Speaking to the media for the first time since joining the Titans, the 23-year-old indicated a permanent switch to the back row was also a big factor in his move.

"There's a lot of competition for back-row spots in (the Penrith) squad," Cartwright said.

"I was playing in the halves, it's not somewhere I wanted to play. I think I'm better suited to the back row.

"I thought if I stay here I'm not going to get as much time on the field.

"If I'm going to improve as a player this is the place I need to be."

Cartwright is already relishing the opportunity to once again work with former mentor Garth Brennan.

"Garth was probably the biggest factor coming up here," he added.

"I've known Garth since I was 16 or 17. He debuted me in the 20s and we had close relationship at Penrith.

"I'm really excited to play footy with him again."
