While there has been no official confirmation or rubber stamping from the NRL, it seems as though IF Todd Carney returns to the NRL it will be with the North Queensland Cowboys.

Some have been perplexed as to why the Cowboys would need to sign Carney.

Their halves department is stacked with talent; Michael Morgan, Johnathan Thurston, Te Maire Martin and 2017 NYC Player of the Year Jake Clifford are part of the Cowboys roster in 2018. 

However, Triple M and The Australian's Brent Read may have unlocked exactly why the Cowboys are trying to sign the former NSW Origin halfback.

"There's a whisper doing the rounds, they (Cowboys) fear Johnathan Thurston will reverse his representative retirement later this year and play Origin," Ready said on Triple M NRL.

"The Cowboys want insurance incase Johnathan Thurston plays Origin."
