Triple M's Mark Geyer has called on the NRL to change the current player contract structure as the November 1 "free agency" period begins.

Speaking on The Rush Hour with MG, Geyer spoke of the time when the Western Reds folded with the whole roster having to find a new clubs just three months out from the start of the new season. 

"It happened to me in 1997, we found out in the first week of November the Western Reds were folding," MG said.

"35 players had to find clubs ASAP and we all found clubs within three weeks.

"So you can't tell me these players need extra time."

Conversely co-host Liam Flanagan argued players should be allowed to negotiate and sign with clubs as per the current rules.
