Jackson Hastings' NRL pre-season with new club Manly has been interrupted by an ankle injury.

The former Sydney Roosters playmaker will have minor surgery this week and has been ruled out of next month's Auckland Nines.

The club said the clean-out operation would give Hastings a chance to play in the Sea Eagles' season opener against Parramatta on March 23.

“Hastings was to make his debut for Manly at the Nines but has opted for immediate attention to a nagging ankle problem,” said coach Trent Barrett.

“He will be available for the start of the NRL Premiership.

“Hastings has impressed at training since joining Manly in early January and has completed all sessions before scans on his ankle revealed a clean out was necessary.

"Coach Trent Barrett said it was decided to have the operation immediately to give Hastings every opportunity to start the season injury free.”

The 21-year-old played 15 NRL games last year.

He left the Roosters after three seasons, having fallen down the five-eighth pecking order behind new recruit Luke Keary and young gun Connor Watson.

Earlier, Barrett said Hastings was a great signing for the club.

“Jackson is a young player with tremendous talent who can easily play several positions,’’ Barrett said.

“He comes to Manly looking to secure a permanent starting spot and his experience gives us good depth in and around the halves and at hooker.”
