Jarrod Mullen's mother says the Newcastle Knights and the NRL have "hung out to dry" her son on the banned substance furore effectively cutting short his sporting career.

The NRL handed the 30-year-old a four year ban in May after he tested positive to a steroid, which he maintains was unknowingly given to him during a physiotherapy treatment.

Leeann Mullen today told the ABC her son had missed out on the "second chance" given to other players.

"He's certainly been hung out to dry, I believe," she told ABC News.

"He's been denying that there's anything wrong for a long time, he's putting up a brave front.

"We've all crumbled around him and he's been the really brave one but things have certainly taken its toll."

Mullen tested positive for Drostanolone after undergoing a routine preseason training test last year, although he's always denied any knowledge of agreeing to take a banned substance.

He made his debut in 2005, playing 211 for the Knights alongside a single State Of Origin appearance for the Blues.
