Johnathan Thurston will go down as one of the best to pull on a rugby league jersey, and he's again proven to be just as good of a bloke off the field.

Channel Seven has reported that Thurston made the trip from Townsville to Sydney to surprise Mary Durose, a 79-year-old cancer patient.

Mary holds a special place in rugby league circles, as she and her husband Peter ran the "Bulldogs House", which housed hundreds of players including the likes of JT, Sonny Bill Williams and Willie Mason. 

JT and Mary hadn't seen each other in over a decade. Mary was responsible for keeping JT in the game after he made the move from Queensland as a teenager and almost quit the game after feeling homesick.

The House was shut down in 2003 after Mary and Peter's health declined. Check out the video below.
