James McManus' legal action against his former NRL club Newcastle reportedly includes allegations he was allowed and encouraged to play too soon after suffering multiple concussions.

Former NSW Origin winger McManus, who played 166 games for the Knights, has a directions hearing listed for the NSW Supreme Court next month.

According to Fairfax Media, McManus will allege the Knights breached its duty of care to him in a series of incidents, including being urged to continue playing despite suffering a head knock in a 2013 semi-final against Canterbury.

In a round 20 game in 2015 against South Sydney, McManus claims he was allowed to return to play after being dazed and suffering a suspected facial injury.

The match proved to be his last, missing the remainder of the season before deciding to sit out the 2016 NRL season due to complications resulting from concussion.

The 31-year-old announced his retirement in August that year.

It's also reported McManus will allege unqualified people contributed to on-field decisions around him playing on or not after suffering head knocks during games.

Newcastle have strenuously denied mismanaging McManus' injuries, while the former Origin winger continues to work at the club in an off-field role.
