Brisbane have stepped in to save the NRL's blushes, agreeing to face Warrington in next year's World Club Series in the UK.

The game was facing an unwanted embarrassment when losing grand finalists Melbourne declined to take part in the tournament which pits the best Australian sides against their counterparts from the English Super League.

Citing fatigue and the strain placed on players, the Storm passed up the opportunity to travel to England alongside NRL champions Cronulla, who will meet English premiers Wigan.

It left the two governing bodies scrambling to find a replacement and considering scaling back the event to a one-game competition.

However the Broncos have stepped in and agreed to meet the Wolves at Halliwell Jones Stadium on February 18.

The Broncos have strong ties to UK rugby league through Wayne Bennett, who is also the English national team coach.

"We have worked hard with the NRL to produce a series that will not only excite fans but one that also allows all clubs in the NRL to have a full pre-season," Super League general manager Mark Foster said.

"Cronulla and Brisbane have shown their commitment to doing this and the value that they place in taking part in the series and we are excited to welcome them to these shores in February."
