Speaking to Triple M Sunday NRL, Cowboys utility Michael Morgan has opened up on what the loss of Johnathan Thurston means to the side - and particularly, who has his big shoes to fill for the rest of 2017.

"There's a bit of added pressure there knowing that Johno won't be coming back," Morgan said. Listen to the full report below.

"Over the previous weeks when he'd been out injured, it had sort of been that we were dealing with it for now, but it is what it is and we've spoken about it as a group."

With Kyle Laybutt slotting in at halfback on Saturday night, it's been a quick elevation to pole position in the club. Morgan said that the team is looking to fill the spot with consideration, and won't rush to lock one person in for the job.

"At the moment it certainly would look that way. Only being his second game, it's always a challenge to come into first grade.

"Trying to do it week-to-week is the biggest thing when you first come into first grade.

"So at the moment yes, but we've also got some other guys there. Te Maire Martin, we just signed him. So you know, in a couple of weeks we might see him in there too."
