Josh Morris has been ruled out for up to eight weeks with a knee injury, the Bulldogs have confirmed.

While there were fears that the long-time Canterbury player had ruptured his ACL, a scan has since revealed that he "significantly sprained" the lateral ligament in his left knee.

The injury won't require surgery but will see Morris benched for close to two months as he recovers.

Morris copped the injury in the 25th minute of the Doggies' 26-16 loss to Cronulla on Sunday after Sharks centre Jesse Ramien fell on him during a tackle.

In classic Morris style, the former NSW and Australia representative played on until halftime.

"He said he wasn't confident in going back out there, so we made a call then," coach Dean Pay said afterwards.

Morris and brother Brett are off-contract at the end of the season and, with the club facing a salary cap squeeze, will have to find a new home for next year.
