Billy Slater has expressed enormous relief at making it through his first hit-out in over a year, telling the Triple M call team that there were times when he thought he wouldn't make it back from injury.

While it was a bit of a mixed performance from the star fullback, he appears to have kept his blistering speed and once he blows away the cobwebs, could well find that killer form from his pre-injury days.

"I didn't play all that great - I was a bit patchy, but I'm just over the moon to get through the game," Slater said. Listen to the full interview below.

"I was more nervous today than I was for my first ever game.

It's been a long time on the sideline for Slater, who has spend 374 days between matches.

And when he stood up and handed over his interchange number to the field staff, the crowd of 12-odd thousand erupted in a standing ovation for his efforts to pull on the jersey again.

"My kids forgot I actually played," Slater said.

"I've got to get out there and do a few things so they remember."
