An NRL fan has had their Raiders membership cancelled following an incident involving a ref during their game against Penrith.

The man was thrown out of GIO Stadium after spitting and yelling abuse at a match official as he left the ground at halftime yesterday.

He has sent the club a letter taking responsibility for his actions and expressing remorse with his membership cancelled for the next 12 months.

Earlier, Raiders coach Ricky Stuart was appalled by the spectators actions.

"It's not on. They (referees) do a tough job. It's unacceptable and definitely should be punished," Stuart said.

"They've got a tough gig. We've all got tough gigs though, but that is unacceptable.

"If it happened to a coach, if it happened to a player, and that's how we do accept the referees - they're as important as a coach or a player."
