Well, we were told the referees would crack down on a number of issues this season and they certainly haven't disappointed.

NRL referees have blown 92 more penalties in Round 1 and 2 in 2018, compared to this time last year.

Here's the breakdown:

2017:

Round 1 Total Penalty Count - 98

Round 2 Total Penalty Count - 96

TOTAL = 194

2018:

Round 1 Total Penalty Count - 127

Round 2 Total Penalty Count - 159

TOTAL = 286

Despite all the penalties, we've still managed to witness some entertaining games of footy BUT how much of a hinderance are the referees having on the game?

Well, Matty Johns and MG believe Tigers coach Ivan Cleary is using the referees constantly blowing for penalties to his side's advantage.

The Tigers copped 18 penalties against them on Saturday night in Melbourne, nine of them coming in succession but still managed to win and remain unbeaten in 2018.
