According to the Daily Telegraph, the Auckland Nines will be axed for 2018, with the initiative to be canned while the NRL decides how to best approach the concept in the future.

Speaking on Triple M Sunday NRL, Triple M's Paul Kent said that this was a good move, since the current model isn't working. Listen to the full report below.

"I think they need to," Kent said.

"The last couple of years, the nines has gone a bit the way of the sevens, where the clubs are trying to limit the amount of exposure of their really good players because we see so many injuries because it's so dynamic.

"We've seen a lot of soft tissue injuries and a couple of season-ending injuries.

"And suddenly some of the tournament loses some of its lustre, and that's when you start to get some of this drop-off.

"I think setting it down for a year is a good idea, and it might reinvigorate it for the following season."

"I think the novelty has worn off," Triple M's Bryan Fletcher said.

"I would love to see it in Brisbane," Triple M's Gorden Tallis said.
