Rabbitohs utility John Sutton has said that he's confident he'll be wearing the cardinal and myrtle next season, despite no resolution to his contract beyond 2017.

He's played 278 first grade games for the Rabbitohs and if he plays on next year for the club he'll crack the 300-mark, which is a huge achievement.

"I've got nothing signed, I'm still working on that. I want to play here next year so hopefully we can get something sorted," he said.

"I love the club and I've been here my whole career, so I wouldn't want to play anywhere else.

"It would probably feel strange but hopefully I can get something sorted and won't have to worry about it too much."

Sutton is the only player remaining from when Russell Crowe took over the club in 2006. He also captained the premiership-winning side in 2014.

It's not clear what the hold up is exactly with him inking on for a further deal, but Sutton has stressed that he will play next year.

He has received a glowing endorsement from star Sam Burgess, who said that he hopes Sutton is the one to make the landmark 300-game achievement.

"I'd love to see him get the opportunity to crack the 300 mark for a club with so much history without a player that's done it," Burgess said.

"I don't think anyone's going to get that close for a long time.

"He's playing good football. He's great around the young boys.

"He's an integral part of the club and he lives and breathes South Sydney, so I'd love to see him here next year."
