Kieran Foran is expected to join Canterbury after confirming he will leave the Warriors at the end of the NRL season, telling his teammates he will return to Sydney to be closer to his children.

It has been widely speculated the 26-year-old would leave the Auckland-based club after one season and play for a Sydney side.

"It has been an incredibly tough decision to make but it has reached the point where I had to make a call and I've done that today," Foran said on Tuesday.

Foran returned to the NRL with the Warriors this season after he took time out of the game due to personal issues, leaving Parramatta midway through last year.

He thanked the Warriors for helping him to get his career and life back on track.

"I really wanted to find a way of staying and spending more time here because it's so good being around the boys and the people here. Every day I have a smile on my face when I come to training," Foran said.

"But, in the end, it came down to my kids and what's best for them. I need to be back in Sydney to be closer to them.

"Before I do there's plenty to do here. I want to finish here as well as I possibly can. We can do something this year and I want to play my part in that."

Foran's signature would be a major boost for the Bulldogs who have already secured Wests Tigers skipper Aaron Woods for next season.

A move to Belmore would see Foran reunite with coach Des Hasler who handed him his debut in 2009.

The Warriors will lose arguably their best player who has formed a strong spine with Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

The club's managing director Jim Doyle said he understood Foran's decision and his departure had been part of their planning.

"I know how much he likes it here and how much he wanted to extend his time but his kids' welfare is paramount," Doyle said.

"We support him in what he has decided to do and wish him all the best.

"For us, it has been great to see how far he has come getting his life back in order and now being in a position to be able to help the team on the field. He wants to finish the season strongly."

Foran has played 161 NRL games and 21 Tests for New Zealand.
