Cameron Munster was sent back to the Melbourne Storm halfway through Australia's World Cup campaign after he was involved in a brawl with Queensland teammate Ben Hunt, claims a new report.

According to FoxSports.com.au, Munster and Hunt's punch-on occurred after the Kangaroos' 46-0 victory over Samoa in Darwin.

Munster was excused from his duties and returned to Melbourne to explain himself to Storm coach Craig Bellamy and football operations boss Frank Ponissi before he rejoined the team ahead of their semi-final against Fiji.

The 23-year-old playmaker is said to have "immediately" apologised to coach Mal Meninga and Test captain Cameron Smith, later shaking hands and "laughing off the incident" with Hunt.

While Ponissi said that he would not be commenting on off-field issues, he told FoxSports.com.au that he was happy with Munster's attitude ahead of the 2018 season.

"What I will say is we are very pleased with how Cameron has returned to pre-season training since coming back in early January," Ponissi said.

"Where Cameron is at right at the moment, his attitude has been first class, he's certainly contributing well and we're very happy with him."

The Broncos have not yet commented on Hunt's involvement in the fight.
