It's fitting that during the clash for the Ron Coote Cup, we're again faced with the prospect of a Rabbitohs player switching allegiance to the Roosters.

In a tale as old as the game, names such as Ron Coote, Craig Wing and Robert "Rocky" Laurie have added to the bitterness in this great rivalry, following the heartbreak of their departure to link up with the enemy.

And now, there's a chance there could be a new chapter in this feud, according to Triple M and the Australian's Brent Read.

"There's been a bit of speculation that the Roosters may have a crack at Angus Crichton," Ready said. Listen to the full report below.

"A few players over time have gone across the two clubs.

"I can tell you that Souths are very keen to keep Angus Crichton.

"They've started talks to sign him to a long-term deal.

"He's also got a year to go on his current deal.

"They see him as a future captain of this footy club, post Sam Burgess and GI going. He's a very important player for them. I think Angus Crichton will stay here a long time."

Another player Souths are looking to lock up is David Tyrrell.
