This misstep by Matt Scott has cost him more than his season, with the Newcastle Knights reportedly withdrawing their offer for his contract next year and beyond.

There was talk that the deal on the cards and worth $2.7 million over three years, according to dailytelegraph.com.au.

However, after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the Cowboys clash with the Broncos, Knights coach Nathan Brown has said that he's no longer chasing Scott.

“We thought he’d be the perfect leader for our younger players coming through,” Brown said to the dailytelegraph.com.au.

“But to be honest I thought he was leaning towards staying at the Cowboys anyway.

“We won’t be taking it any further. We just wish him a good recovery.”

What makes the situation even worse is how innocuous the incident appears to be. Fox Sports' Zac Bailey appears to have pinpointed the moment Scott tore his ACL, and it seems to have just been due to changing direction. See the video below.

"To get an ACL and to be that age (31), it probably would put doubt in," Triple M's Gorden Tallis said on Triple M Sunday NRLListen to the full discussion below.

"It's big money and to be the leader of the forward pack, it probably would scare people off.

"It's Matty Scott's loss but it's probably the Cowboys' gain."
