Speaking on Triple M Sunday NRL, incoming Sharks chairman Dino Mezzatesta has discussed his plans to introduce a mandatory hair follicle test for the playing group next season.

In order to combat illicit drug use, the system would see Sharks players tested four times a year.

Hair testing can pick up any drug use within a 90-day period, and the Daily Telegraph has reported that the testing would involve players at all levels in the club.

"We've still got hurdles to get through, but we'll continue to look at whatever else is out there and we want to drive that charge as well," Mezzatesta said.

"We want to make sure that we're the frontrunner of protecting not only our players but the community at large, and I think everybody's got a responsibility to be doing things in that nature, so we're no different.

"If there's something new out there, we'll continue to look at it, and of course we'll go through the proper channels."
