Kiwi halfback Shaun Johnson has taken a dig at the New Zealand media and Kiwi fans after they were bundled out of the World Cup by Fiji.

Johnson told stuff.co.nzthe media got what they wanted as the Kiwi's were sensationally eliminated, losing a try-less match 4-2 in Wellington.

"The most disappointing thing for me is that everyone who doubted us - the fans, media - yous got your way," Johnson said.

"We couldn't deliver what I thought we could deliver. That's what burns, that's probably what hurts the most.

"We let down our country.

"I don't think (there was any more we could have done). Hindsight's a wonderful thing, but we were competing until the 80th minute trying to win that game tonight and hopefully that's what everyone saw, because that's what it felt like out on the field."

Meanwhile, Fiji now have a semi-final showdown with Australia in Brisbane on Friday night.
