The naming of Johnathan Thurston on an extended Cowboys bench for round nine will shake up the Australian squad to be named for the ANZAC test on May 5, with the star set to slip right into the rep side.

However for James Maloney, it will mean a likely exclusion from selection in the run-on side, should Thurston be fit for the test.

Maloney was largely tipped to slot in for Thurston at five-eighth.

It's a pleasant selection headache - if such a thing exists - with the depth of the Australian side demonstrable through the queue of capable players ready to step up should Thurston have been ruled out.

"He obviously had that calf problem, and that has implications on his spot in the Australian side as it looks like he will be selected," Triple M and the Australian's Brent Read said.

The squad will be named on Wednesday at 11am.
