Triple M Sunday NRL's call team believe the flawed RLPA awards system needs to be changed after James Tedesco beat Cameron Smith as the game's best player for the 2017 season.

"With all respect to the awards, it's something they need to reconsider the way they vote," Paul Kent said.

The current system allows players to vote on a 3-2-1 basis on the team they just played, however Kenty believes the system is flawed because at times it can reward mediocrity.

"The system is flawed because it rewards teams that aren't travelling so well, that have one or two good players in their side but not a good team," he said.

"Look at the team of the year, only one player form the top four teams made that side, who was Cameron Smith."

"Yet of the 13 players named, nine came from the bottom eight."

When compared to the Dally M awards, the two systems don't compare according to Kenty.

"If you go through the history of the winner for Dally M award, I find it very hard for anyone to argue that someone didn't deserve that title," he said.
