In 2018 the NRL referees have become one of, if not the biggest talking points around the game.

Incredibly, the average penalty count this year is up around 18/19 per game yet the opening game of the State of Origin series saw only five penalties blown all game. 

NSW were only penalised once, with the Maroon taking the brunt of the penalty count. 

It has led to league legend Peter Sterling asserting "the game is harder to watch now than any other time in history."
