2018 .... The year of the penalty?

We were told about the crackdown at the beginning of the season and the referees sure did deliver.

The referees had blown nearly 100 penalties more in the opening two rounds of the competition compared to the exact same period in 2017.

And we all remember the 33 penalty game between the Sharks and Storm, that also saw Cameron Smith sent to the sin-bin for the first time in his career.

BUT, exactly which sides are the serial offenders and who are on the opposite end?

Well, with help from Rugby League Pro statistics, we've crunched the numbers and this is what we found:

The Penrith Panthers and Canberra Raiders (right) are the worst of the 16 NRL sides, both conceded 82 penalties after 8 matches.

It seems to have unfazed the Panthers however, as they sit in second position on the ladder nicely placed only two points behind leaders the Dragons.

The Titans, Sharks and Eels round out the top 5.

On the opposing end, despite the Cowboys 'winning' the most amount of penalties with 82 it hasn't helped their cause in 2018.

The pre-season premiership favourites are in all-sorts after a disastrous start to the season, as they languish in 15th position on just four points.

Surprisingly the Sharks find themselves in second place with the Sea Eagles (78), Dragons (78), Raiders (77) and Panthers (77) rounding out the top 6.
