It's been reported that Ruben Wiki may not be the only retiree to front up for the Auckland Nines franchise, with none other than Anthony Mundine eyeing off a return to the NRL.

According to rugbyleagueweek.com.au, the 41-year-old is gearing up for next year's 9s tournament.

The Dragons would be the likely choice for the former NRL player.

There's previously been a bit of talk about a Mundine comeback, and the 9s could be the perfect format for him.

"My body feels good, I'm not beat up. I just need to get my speed back," Mundine said to Triple M Saturday NRL about the possibility of returning.

"I left the game when i was in my prime at 24/25 years old.

"They keep talking about the pace, but the pace hasn't changed. I'm one of the fittest athletes out there.

"There's athletes, then there's special athletes, and then there's extraordinary athletes. I'm in the extraordinary bracket."
