Des Hasler is known to be a bit of a character in rugby league, and Triple M Saturday NRL was joined by former Manly legend Steve "Beaver" Menzies who dished the dirt on one of the best Dessie yarns you'll hear. Listen to the full interview with Beaver below.

"Dessie doesn't spend much money and used to have this pair of shoes. He'd had them for 15 years. I was in year 12 and he came to give me a jersey and he was in these shoes.

"They were brown Doc Martens.

"So we went on an away trip and somehow three people stole one of these shoes.

"So a few weeks go past and we're at training and then the trainer runs out with this sheet. It's got letters cut out and stuck on it, and it says 'Des, we have your shoe. Give $300 to the players' fund or the shoe gets it'.

"So Des blew up. He said 'I'm going to flog youse'.

"A few days later he gets another note with the letters cut out: 'Des, we make the rules. Give us the cash'. And one of his shoelaces was cut in half.

"He didn't pay up, so he never got the shoe back.

"I got married maybe 15, 20 years after that day and the shoe appeared.

"And Dessie is at my wedding and he goes 'No! I only threw the other one out two weeks ago!'"
