Three Prominent NRL Players Involved In Incident At Coogee Overnight

A big story broke on Channel Nine news from Danny Weidler involving Shaun Kenny-Dowall and two of the Sharks best young players - Jack Bird and Valentin Holmes - and their alleged involvement in a bar scuffle in Coogee.

Weidler told the Triple M Grill Team what happened at the Coogee Pavilion.

”I’ve spoken to everyone involved, all of the players, police etc - and the story I’ve been told through Cronulla boys largely is that Jack Bird noticed somebody having a ‘crack’ at Shaun Kenny-Dowall. Kenny-Dowall was not involved in that discussion,” said Weidler, on the Triple M Grill Team.

”Bird took offence to what was said. From there Valentine Holmes came out of a bathroom to see what was going on, there was some sort of argument, after that Holmes said to Bird ‘look, we’re better than that. Let’s walk away from this’.

"The players are said to have walked away and that’s when trouble began.

”Holmes, according to somebody who witnessed this, was knocked down and maybe knocked out. Holmes only remembers being picked up off the ground by patrons at the Coogee Pavilion. And Jack Bird was also struck, I'm not sure how severely."

This is at odds with what Cronulla boss Lyall Gorman comments that neither player was hit.

”I don’t know if [Gorman] is fully across what went on but definitely both players have confirmed they were struck. The police are involved in this matter. They’re taking it quite seriously," said Weidler.

”Firstly, Shaun Kenny-Dowall has done nothing wrong. And secondly, it appears on the surface the Cronulla boys haven’t done anything wrong.” Listen to the full audio below.

Sharks CEO Clears Players Over Bar Fight

Cronulla CEO Lyall Gorman insists Sharks players Valentine Holmes and Jack Bird have no case to answer over their involvement in a Sydney bar scuffle.

Nine News reported on Monday night that Holmes was briefly knocked unconscious and Bird king-hit after the pair stepped in to defend Sydney Roosters winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall in an argument with a patron at the Coogee Pavilion on Sunday.

But Gorman said the players were not struck and the situation only escalated after the Sharks pair walked away.

"We understand there was an incident in and around several NRL players at which Jack Bird and Val were present," Gorman told Fairfax Media.

"There were no assertions at all that Jack and Val did anything inappropriate in any shape or form."

The NRL say they are yet to be contacted by Cronulla regarding the incident, while the Roosters also claimed that Kenny-Dowall was not involved in an altercation.

None of the trio of NRL players were asked the leave the venue.

Holmes was last month suspended from representing Queensland during this year's State of Origin series after breaking curfew during an emerging Maroons camp.

The Sharks winger was one of eight players blacklisted by Maroons management after he was issued with an infringement notice when he became involved in an argument with a cab driver in a taxi queue in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley.
