Following news that NRL clubs lost a combined amount of $53.4 million in 2016, couriermail.com.au has reported that the NRL is set to put the Titans on the market.

The NRL took control of the Titans in 2015 as the club looked on the brink of financial disaster, with the club recording a $2.5 million deficit last year.

Now, after a year of speculation, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg has confirmed that talks will begin to sell the Titans.

"We want to make sure we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past and when we do get to an ownership model, the local community must have a heavy stake in the ownership of the Titans," Greenberg told couriermail.com.au.

Given how Newcastle has struggled after the failed Tinkler privatisation, the NRL is reportedly planning to be thorough with the sale of the Titans and prospective buyers.
