James Tedesco’s first year as a Sydney Rooster was quite remarkable.

During his six years at the Wests Tigers, ‘Teddy’ never played in a finals series and was yet to debut for his country.

Fast forward 12 months and the 25-year-old has achieved almost everything there is to accomplish in the game of rugby league.

Tedesco played a vital role in the Roosters 2018 Premiership win, was crowned NSW best player in the successful 2018 Origin series, debuted for the Kangaroos and was also awarded the Jack Gibson medal as the Roosters player of the season.

A fair list of accomplishments but still wasn’t good enough to win the ultimate individual award in the game, the Golden Boot as the best player in the world.

A robbery some would say but unfortunately based on the criteria this wasn’t the case.

For 2018, the criteria to win the Golden Boot award was based solely on the international scene of rugby league.

This covers all international games played from the World Cup final in December of 2017 to the second Test between the New Zealand and England.

Tedesco unfortunately only played two international games in this period; a tough loss against New Zealand followed by the Kangaroos win over Tonga.

That was not enough to be named the best in the world.

The winner, Tom Makinson had an impressive international campaign.

The 27-year-old, who plays for St. Helens, scored four tries in his first two Internationals for England during their three-match series against the Kiwis.

That was enough for Makinson to be awarded the ‘best player in the world’.

Although, the validity of that tag will be questioned until the criteria changes to cover an entire season of rugby league.
