A 99-year-old bloke has smashed the world record in the 50m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games trials.

George Corones, competing in the 100-104 age group, swam the 50 metres in 56.12 seconds up in Queensland, obliterating the previous record by 35 seconds.

He's eligible for the age group as he turns 100 next month.

Corones was the only competitor in the official event, specifically staged for him to have a crack at taking down the world record.

"It was an exemplary swim for me, well balanced... and I was ready to hit the [wall] at the end very hard with my hand," he told the BBC.

After swimming in his youth, Corones took it up once again at the age of 80 to keep fit, and now swims three times a week.
