Five time finalist Sir Andy Murray has pulled out of the Australian Open.

Murray has failed to overcome an ongoing hip injury.

He has not played a competitive match since Wimbledon last year.

The three-time Grand Slam champion flew from Brisbane to Melbourne today, but will fly home to London.

It follows a similar attempt to return to the US Open last August that ended in Murray leaving two days before the tournament began.

He had earlier pulled out of the Brisbane International with an emotional Instagram post:

The Australian Open starts on January 15th.
