Australian Richie Porte has suffered one of the 'worst crashes in race history' overnight in Stage 9 of the Tour de France.

Porte was part of a group of races descending down Mont du Chat when he lost control of his bike approaching a turn, veered off the road before crashing hard into the bitumen at approximately 72km/h.

He then skidded across the tarmac into a rock wall before being struck by fellow contestant Dan Martin.

Post

Porte lay bloodied and motionless on the bitumen for several minutes before being placed in a neck brace by paramedics and loaded into an ambulance.

The crash has ruled out Porte for the remainder of 'Le Tour', which is devastating news for the Tasmanian who was competing for the first time as a 'number 1' rider for team BMC.
