Australian Sevens captain James Stannard is in hospital after being coward punched last night, according to News Corp.

Stannard is in a stable condition after being punched in an unprovoked attack outside a Coogee Bay Road kebab shop this morning.

A man approached Stannard around 3am and punched him in the head.

Stannard fell and hit head on the pavement.

Police have a 22-year-old man in custody.

He has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and has been granted conditional bail.

He is expected to face Waverley Local Court on Thursday April 19.
