Channel 7 broadcasters Basil Zempilas and Johanna Griggs have absolutely roasted the Commonwealth Games organisers after a lacklustre closing ceremony.

The organisers of the closing ceremony arranged to have the athletes enter the stadium prior to the start of the ceremony, meaning television viewers missed out on seeing the competitors that had been the star of the show over the last two weeks.

Zempilas and Griggs apologised to the viewers for their frustration, and went on to dress down the host broadcaster of the event for the decision made.

“We understand many people have been disappointed by tonight’s closing ceremony, and to be perfectly honest Jo, so have we been,” Zempilas said.

“It hasn’t really lived up to expectations.”

Griggs in particular was visibly furious, making a point of sharpening her criticism when she felt Zempilas was holding back.

“I’m sorry, you’re being way too polite,” Griggs said.

“People thinking Channel 7 has chosen not to show pictures of athletes… we’re the Australian rights holders so we can only show the pictures that are provided by the actual host broadcasters.

“They made the decision not to have the athletes enter the stadium.

“They made the decision not to show the flag bearers, and I’m furious. They’re actually wrecking a tradition that’s so important, a part of the Commonwealth Games.

“You want to see the athletes come in, you want to see them jump in front of cameras, you want to see them celebrating.”

Zempilas said that most of the athletes left early.

“We’ve been very lucky to be at many events of these types events, and we’ve never seen a stadium as empty as this so soon after the conclusion of a closing ceremony,” he said.

“To be brutally honest, most of the athletes left during the ceremony.

Zemplias criticised the length of the speeches as well.

“The speeches, look we understand the dignitaries need to get their messages out their… but they were way too long tonight,” he said.

“Way too long, and dare I say it a little self indulgent.

“It was not necessary.”
