Bernard Tomic must qualify directly to the Australian Open after opting to skip the Australian Open wildcard playoff.

142 ranked Tomic would have been the top seed at the playoff, which takes place next week at Melbourne Park.

The winner of the playoff is guaranteed a place in the main draw.

Aussie Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt had said that it would be the “right move” for Tomic to nominate the playoff which has has gone on to ignore.

209 ranked Thanasi Kokkinakis has already received a wildcard to the tournament.

Tomic must now go through a qualifying campaign if he is to play at the Australian Open.
