Australia's national basketball squad, The Boomers, have been involved in an ugly brawl during their World Cup qualifying match with the Philippines in Manila.

All hell broke loose when Australian shooting guard Chris Goulding was elbowed by an opponent, before teammate Daniel Kickert retaliated by elbowing Roger Ray Pogoy in the face.

As the crowd and commentators watched on in shock, punches, even chairs were thrown, while others were wrestled and strangled.

Four Australian and nine Filipino players were ejected from the arena, leaving the home side with just three players and forcing them to forfeit at the end of the third quarter.

Basketball Australia CEO Anthony Moore apologised to fans in a statement.

"Basketball Australia deeply regrets the incident in tonight’s match between the Boomers and the Philippines in Manila. We are extremely disappointed with what happened and our role in it," Moore said.

"This is not the spirit in which sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball."

"We apologise to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down."
