Professional wrestler Cody Rhodes has opened up on why the New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) tournament will enter uncharted territory when the Fallout Down Under Tour hits Australian shores later this week.

Formally known as Stardust in the WWE, Cody goes by the name of The American Nightmare these days and told Triple M it was a “measured decision” for New Japan to do its second expansion show in Australia, which comes off the success of the first edition in the United States.

“If you look at the names [on this tour] Kazuchika Okada, Jay White, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and myself, it’s amazing that we’re all on the same roster, all part of the same outlet,” he said.

“I don’t know how New Japan has managed to get us all in the one room but it makes for an incredibly good show.”

Also showcased on the Fallout Down Under tour are some of Australia’s most talented home-grown wrestlers, which Cody explains he’s excited to see firsthand.

“It’s a huge opportunity sharing a locker room with some of the absolute best in the world and from what I hear, guys like [Aussie wrestler] Robbie Eagles particularly they’re going to fit in just fine,” he said.

“Wrestling is a language all to itself. You can go anywhere with it and you don’t have to be from that country or speak the language and your music can transcend borders and cultures, wrestling is everywhere.

“This will give an opportunity for guys like that who want to take their stuff everywhere.”

Cody Rhodes himself comes with a list of achievements including being part of The Bullet Club, one of the most popular wrestling factions in the modern era.

Backed by a wrestling pedigree, Rhodes was also born into one of the world’s most famous wrestling families.

His brother Goldust has been in the business for close to 30 years and his father is none other than the legendary American Dream aka Dusty Rhodes.

“He [Dusty Rhodes], until he passed away, wanted me to be an actor, but he also recognised that I loved it [wrestling] I was just obsessed with it,” Cody said.

“Because of who he was, it was very easy for me to get into wrestling and get involved with the right people as far as training is concerned.

“He didn’t want me in it but he definitely gave me the tools to succeed.”

And succeed, Cody has.

Since departing the WWE back in 2016, the 32-year-old has metamorphosed into a main event player.

Using his name value to shine a light on other wrestlers and promotions such as NJPW and Ring of Honour, Rhodes has proven that there’s more variety than ever and not only is it a great time to be a wrestler but a wrestling fan also.

And he promises Australian fans will see the “absolute best wrestling firing on all cylinders”, which will also showcase the “sports side of sports entertainment”.

“WWE is going to enter a time when it’s at its best,” he said.

“NXT is going to be at its best, Ring of Honour at its best, and New Japan at its best, because it can’t not be.”
