Four time Tour de France winner Chris Froome has been found to have failed a drugs test during his Vuelta a España win in September.

An investigation by the Guardian found that Froome had double the permitted levels of asthma medication salbutamol in his body during the event.

Under World Anti-Doping Agency rules, athletes are allowed 1,000 nanograms per millilitre of the drug, but Froome’s urine sample taken during the Vuelta registered twice that.

If Froome — who is Britain’s most successful road cyclist — can’t sufficiently explain the failed test he may be stripped of the Vuelta title and could be banned by the UCI.

According to the Guardian, Froome admitted he upped his salbutamol dose during the race, but said he did not break any rules.

His win in the Spanish race made him the first to do it in a double with the Tour de France since 1978, after he won the French race for the third time in a row in July.
