New Zealand Breakers forward Akil Mitchell has confirmed he still has vision in his left eye after his horrific injury against the Cairns Taipans on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old copped a finger to the eye which saw his eyeball dislodged midway through the fourth quarter.

It was an injury that shocked fans and teammates.

But Mitchell's eye has been relocated back into his socket, and his recovery has been so good he has been cleared to return home.

“I have had an update from a member of our medical team who is with Akil at Auckland Hospital," Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher said in a statement.

"They have been advised by the specialists that Akil is sitting up and resting, and has vision to his injured eye. While there is some damage, the early reports are very positive that the injury is not as serious as first feared.

“Akil’s immediate recovery has been such that he is being released to return home, but will undergo further medical tests tomorrow.

Mitchell himself has confirmed his rapid recovery - with a sense of humour, too.
