The game was delayed for up to 15 minutes while Mitchell received treatment.

The 24-year-old made his own way off the court, as visibly upset teammates shielded his face.

He has been taken to hospital, according to the Breakers.

The Breakers were trailing the Cairns Taipans 69-61 at the time of the incident, and lost the match 94-81.

Taipans captain Cameron Gliddon passed on his best wishes.

"It was really hard to see a player go down like that, it's hard to watch and we all send our thoughts to Akil," he said after the match.

Mitchell has played 24 games for the Breakers this season, averaging 9.4 points and 2.1 assists, and had 13 points and 10 rebounds prior to his injury.

Due to the graphic nature of the injury we have chosen not to share images of it.
