Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has hit back at criticism from tennis legend Ken Rosewall.

Rosewall hit out at Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, saying suggestions their behaviour reflected badly on the previous generation of tennis players was "accurate".

“I feel a lot of us older players, who came from tennis-playing families, we learned to play the game and behave,” he told Reuters.

“Plus the fact there was more discipline then. When I first came overseas, Harry Hopman was the captain and coach of the team. Our team was made up of players of 17, 18 and 19 years of age and he was like a father figure.

“The players of today, because they’ve made more money, they think that they don’t need that discipline, and misbehave accordingly.”

Kyrgios wasn't too pleased, posting a fairly fiery tweet, which he later deleted.

"Same shit everyday man. people need to stay in their lane," he tweeted.

"I’m sorry we can’t all be perfect like you ‘older players’ smh (shaking my head)."
