Nick Kyrgios has abandoned his doubles campaign to ensure he can progress as far as possible in the singles at the Australian Open.

The decision for Kyrgios and his partner, Matt Reid, to pull out gives Kyrgios the best possible shot at winning in the singles.

The Herald Sun reported the decision largely came from Reid, rather than Kyrgios abandoning his partner.

It gifts French pair Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin, their scheduled opponents on Saturday, passage into the third round.

Kyrgios played doubles in 40-degree heat on Thursday before his third-round clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday night.

“I felt heavy. My legs felt a little bit heavy,” he said.

“Yeah, yesterday was hot. I played a two-hour doubles match. It took a lot out of me. I tried my best. I wanted to win.

"I think the adrenaline kicked in the third and fourth sets (against Tsonga). I had a couple bananas, started to feel better, got a bit of a second wind."

The tennis star was overheard cursing at himself for playing doubles during his clash with Tsonga.

"Why did I play doubles? Doubles shit, what are you thinking?" he said during the second set.
