A 17-year old junior girls tennis player has been sensationally booted from the Australian Open following an incident involving a ball kid.

Maria Vittoria Viviani of Italy hit a ball away in disappointment after dropping the first set of her Round 1 match - accidentally striking the child in the chest area.

The punishment has been widely considered as overly harsh given the incident was rather innocuous.
