If we're being totally honest, we only ever catch a glimpse of ice hockey during the Winter Olympics or if we happen to be watching Fox Sports on a weekday afternoon.

But after seeing this clip of two hockey players absolutely whaling on each other, we're considering a more avid viewing schedule.

The NHL in the US is currently knee-deep in their play-off period, which may go some way to explaining why tensions between the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning were running so high.

While we're still not clear on what exactly the tipping point was, it resulted in Tom Wilson of Washington and Tampa's Braydon Coburn turning on each other in an actual, the-gloves-are-off fist fight.

We have two thoughts here. Firstly, yes they're both professional ice hockey players but how did they stay upright for so long? Impressive core strength.

Secondly, those referees are doing absolutely nothing to break that fight up. They even look like they're enjoying it. Ice hockey is nuts.

Apparently these two players had attempted to scuffle a little earlier in the game and were sent to the penalty box for two minutes, where they sat with their fists clenched until they were let back onto the ice and could go hammer-and-tongs again.

Oh, and Washington won.
