Sam Stosur has gone down to Peurto Rican Monica Puig in the first round of the Australian Open.

The 24-year-old Puig won the encounter 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Stosur had match point in the second set tie-break but couldn’t convert.

Puig made no such mistake in the third set, converting the first of her two match points.

This will be 58th-ranked Puig’s fifth consecutive appearance in the second round of the Australian Open, while 41st-ranked Stosur is out in the first round for the third year on the trot.

Puig made headlines in 2016 when she became the first athlete to ever win gold for Puerto Rico when she knocked off German Angelique Kerber.

She takes on Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the second round.
