Great Britain have beaten Canada in the Davis Cup in bizarre circumstances after Denis Shapovalov was disqualified for hitting the ball into the umpire’s face.

The 17-year-old was was already trailing by two sets and was down 2-1 in the third against Britain’s Kyle Edmund when his frustration boiled over.

After his shot went out of play, Shapovalov took another ball from his pocket and hit it towards the crowd.

Unfortunately, the effort hit umpire Arnaud Gabas in the face and the Frenchman required an ice pack to reduce the immediate swelling around his left eye.
