Long-running UFC series The Ultimate Fighter is finally coming to Australian free-to-air television, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The 28th season of the reality show will star Aussie middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and will be broadcast on Channel Ten around the country from this Thursday night as part of a historic deal with the UFC.

Whittaker will take on the role of coach throughout the series, leading one team of would-be UFC fighters as they battle for a contract against a rival team.

The second team is coached by middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum, who Whittaker will face early next year to defend his title.

Australia's first-ever UFC champ has described the deal as "huge for the sport".

"Over the past couple of years, the sport has been growing steadily but it's this sort of commitment from a TV network that really is vital," Whittaker said.

"There's a bit of an MMA explosion here in Australia at the moment and it's great to be a part of that."

Channel Ten will also broadcast two live events on their digital channel One as part of the agreement with the UFC: The TUF Finale in Vegas on December 1 and Australia's next UFC event, taking place the following day in Adelaide.

The Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters airs Thursday nights on One from 9.30pm.
