Complete and utter mediocrity has never been so average.

American-born Hungarian skier Elizabeth Swaney finished dead last in qualifying for the women's pipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

How? She just skied straight down the bloody thing.

Swaney's single trick was a wild 180 spin right at the end of her run, which saw her record scores of 30.00 and 31.40 and fall an absolute short of the final.

It's left viewers questioning how she even managed to qualify in the first place.

Swaney did it elaborately: after failing to make the United States team, Swaney tried to compete for Venezuela, the country of her mother's birth.

Failing that, she aimed to do the same for Hungary, where her grandparents were born, which proved more successful.

Swaney qualified by competing in the necessary World Cup events, but was selective and aimed for the competitions that were less prestigious and had less opponents.

Winter Olympic qualification needs you to consistently place in the top 30 in World Cup competitions across a long time span - exactly what Swaney did.

In December, she finished 13th out of 15 competitors in a competition in China while most of the world's best were in a more high profile contest elsewhere.

“The field is not that deep in the women’s pipe and she went to every World Cup, where there were only 24, 25, or 28 women,” said ski halfpipe and slopestyle judge Steele Spence told the Denver Post.

“She would compete in them consistently over the last couple years and sometimes girls would crash so she would not end up dead last. There are going to be changes to World Cup quotas and qualifying to be eligible for the Olympics. Those things are in the works so technically you need to qualify up through the system.”
